Event Details
The Bedford Central Library will be hosting its first Open Chess Tournament sponsored by the Friends of the Bedford Public Library!
The tournament is open to all players, all experience levels and ages. Prizes will be awarded for the top two players in the preteen (twelve and under) and in the teen–adult (thirteen and up) classes.
Advanced registration will be taken until 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 17th. Sign up below or call us at 540-586-8911 ext 1100 or 1102. Day of registration will start at 10:00 AM.
There will be 4 Tournament Rounds...
Round 1: 10:30 to 12:00 PM
Lunch Break: 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM (a simple lunch will be provided for advanced registrants)
Round 2: 12:30 to 2:00 PM
Round 3: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Round 4: 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM
Participants should bring a standard chess set (Staunton design; novelty chess sets will not be allowed in tournament play) and a chess clock if they have one.
Tournament Rules:
- Time for clocked games: 30 moves in 30 minutes + 20 moves in 15 minutes
- “Touch-move”: a touched piece must be the piece moved on that turn
- No “take backs”; one’s move is completed when the moved piece is released
- Two illegal moves discovered by a player and judged by the tournament director will result in a forfeit
- No distracting one’s opponent (talking, being loud, or moving to distract or influence the opponent)
- Sportsmanship: shake hands both before and after the game
